Our skin changes from season to season. In January you were as dry as a raisin scone and now your face is an oil slick you can’t get under control. The worst part is, you find a skin care routine that is really working for you, and then your skin changes and you aren’t sure what to use anymore. Even though I am a licensed esthetician, I still face the same struggles. Over the last few years I have learned that you can totally improve most skin situations by just changing out a few products. Any good skin care routine should include at least a cleanser, toner, and a moisturizer that are being used day and night. Once you have those nailed down, you can really start customizing your routine with serums and correctives, masks, peels, etc. By keeping the core of your routine consistent and just changing out a couple of items, you can help get used to a new normal, without shocking it so much it does the opposite of what you want it to.
Here are five items I consider to be essential for my summer skin care routine.
Let the Good Times Roll Cleanser. This cleanser from Lush Cosmetics has been a staple in my skin care routine for years. This is one of those things I use all year round. With the corn maize and polenta ingredients, this cleanser is mildly exfoliating, while the cinnamon is stimulating, and it smells AMAZING. Seriously, it smells like caramel popcorn. The best part is that it is good for all skin types and it’s gentle enough to use every day!
Eau Roma Toner Water. This toner water from Lush (can you tell I love Lush?) is perfect for my sensitive skin. During a change of season, the pH in our skin can go haywire and our skin becomes unbalanced. Toner will help to rebalance pH, which should ideally be about a 4 or slightly acidic on the pH scale. Toner will also help to rehydrate the skin. Especially in summer it is easy to become dehydrated, which affects our skin. On top of that we are exposing it to more sun, sweat, pool water, etc. Be kind to your skin this summer (and all year round) by giving it the hydration it needs. Remember, hydrated skin is clear skin.
Rosy Cheeks Fresh Face Mask. I have rosacea that tends to flare up in the summer. The heat and sun just aggravate it and this delightful mask helps me to get it under control. The rose brings down inflammation, while the calamine reduces the burn. Bonus: this mask can also be used on bug bites as the ingredients will bring down itch and swelling. While this mask is a bit too drying in winter due to the calamine, it is perfect for summer when my skin is more oily. I use this about 3-4 times a week and it has made all the difference!
Hawaiian Tropic Silk Hydration with SPF 30. It is imperative that you are wearing a minimum of SPF 30 on your skin ALL YEAR ROUND. Thats right, all year. Even when it’s overcast, 80% of the sun’s harmful UV rays still penetrate through the clouds. Once sun damage is done to your skin, the damage is irrevocable. While you might be able to lighten some of the hyperpigmentation (dark spots) through treatments, the risk of skin cancer is still ever present. I promise you, having a summer tan is not worth risking skin cancer. Please just wear your sunscreen. Unfortunately, Lush does’t offer a sunscreen, but I like this one in particular, because it doesn’t leave my skin feeling greasy and it’s the perfect weight for a daytime moisturizer.
Celestial Moisturizer. This lightweight moisturizer is perfect for night time. While it is important to wear SPF during the day, wearing it at night could prevent skin cell turnover as your skin renews while you sleep. This moisturizer is perfect because it’s gentle on my rosacea and can be used over a sunburn as it will calm stressed skin. The cocoa butter base with vanilla and almond not only smells amazing, but will have your skin feel buttery soft when you wake up.
Lush is an amazing company, and I am telling you their products WORK. Take it from an esthetician who has been using them for years. I know it can be overwhelming to figure out what products are best for you when there are so many out there. Feel free to contact me or leave me a comment with any questions you might have! I am happy to lend my professional opinion as best I can.
Hope you are having the best summer!
You are loved,
